The story
behind the place.
Maldivian culture is largely invisible to resort visitors, which is itself interesting. The inhabited local islands — Maafushi, Thulusdhoo, Himmafushi — have a very different character from the resort islands: mosques, fish markets, traditional dhoni boat-builders, and the game of bashi being played in the evening. The Maldivian people are almost entirely Muslim, and local island dress codes apply away from resort beaches. The dhoni — a wooden fishing boat that has been the foundation of Maldivian life for centuries — is still used for fishing, though motorised now. Traditional Maldivian cuisine (bodu mas, rihaakuru paste, mas huni tuna with coconut) is rarely found in resorts but worth seeking on a local island excursion.
