Andaman Islands Emerald Waters & Quiet Shores

The essence

The Andaman Islands are one of India's last genuinely remote destinations — 572 islands scattered across the Bay of Bengal, of which only 37 are inhabited. Most visitors arrive in Port Blair and take a ferry to Havelock Island, where Radhanagar Beach has been ranked among Asia's finest: a two-kilometre arc of white sand backed by dense pandanus forest. Beneath the surface, the reef systems are world-class — the coral bleaching of 2016 has largely recovered, and visibility on calm days reaches 25 metres. Neil Island offers an even quieter version of the same experience, with fewer visitors and bicycle-paced days.

Culture & History

The story
behind the place.

The Andaman Islands' human history is layered and, in parts, dark. The Cellular Jail in Port Blair — built by British colonial authorities to house Indian independence prisoners — is now a museum and site of a moving sound-and-light show. The jail held central figures in India's independence struggle, and walking its corridors gives the islands a historical weight the beaches alone do not. The indigenous Jarawa and Sentinelese tribes, protected by Indian law from outside contact, represent some of the last uncontacted peoples on earth. Their protection is absolute, and any attempt at contact is illegal and dangerous — a firm boundary that the Indian government enforces rigorously.
